Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee. This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) Union, and is subject to the current agreement between the AMEA and the Municipality of Anchorage. DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Health Department HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. LOCATION: 825 L Street

Example of Duties

Coordinate and perform public education and outreach specific to improving Anchorage’s air quality and other environmental health matters such as food-safety, pool-safety, and environmental toxins. Plan, prepare, and implement advertising and outreach campaigns to overcome obstacles and promote behavior changes to reduce air emissions and expand community awareness of environmental health matters. Attend public events and provide community and organizational opportunities on environmental health measures such as block heater use, safe bicycling, and safe food handling. Collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies and community partners to achieve program goals. Design and edit a variety of print and broadcast materials to publicize program services, activities, and events. Utilize social media sites to promote health as it relates to the environment. Manage Environmental Health grants including the Air Quality Public Awareness Grant. Administers grant activities, budgets, purchases, monitoring, and reporting. Perform other related duties as assigned. The Anchorage Health Department (AHD) engages in the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) emergency responses and the federal Incident Command System (ICS). This includes training exercises as part of the AHD’s Crisis Health Action Team (CHAT) and municipal Emergency Operations Center (EOC). In the case of a natural or manmade disaster AHD’s employees may be called to engage in emergency operations responses and recovery.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business or Public Administration, Computer Information Systems, Finance or similar discipline and two (2) years of experience in public health or equivalent experience in another discipline performing educational or promotional activities. OR Associate’s degree in Accounting, Business or Public Administration, Computer Information Systems, Finance or similar discipline and four (4) years of experience in public health or equivalent experience in another discipline performing educational or promotional activities. OR High school diploma, GED or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in public health or equivalent experience in another discipline performing educational or promotional activities. Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver’s license at time of hire.

Experience in web design and editing.
Experience with Canva, or similar publication software.

All required licenses must remain current for the duration of employment. Military Service Interview Preference: Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration. Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service.
